GYNECOMASTIA

GINECOMASTIA.jpg

A gynecomastia is a benign condition where the male mammary glands are enlarged, causing the appearance of female breasts. This syndrome can happen spontaneously during puberty, or it can be provoked by some medicines like estrogens, corticosteroids, spirinolactone, digoxin, cimetadine, amphetamines, or certain substances like cannabis. It is important to perform the necessary tests to diagnose the causes, and to discard hormonal or glandular problems.

Once the condition is diagnosed and other problems are discarded, plastic surgery can be a viable option to eliminate the unwanted tissue. Dr. Rodriguez-Balasquide can help you determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure. There are several different methods of gynecomasty surgery:

  • Liposuction – Allows the gradual reduction of the tissue borders without secondary effects. Complicated gynecomastia situations can require an open surgery, where the incision is done under the breast area.

  • Endoscopic surgery – This procedure uses a flexible tube, or endoscopy,  to examine the breast's interior. Afterwards, the extra tissue is suctioned without the need for a surgical incision.
